An old idea about protection

Long before protection meant a lock, an alarm, or an insurance policy, it meant something smaller and more personal: an object carried on the body, chosen because of what it had survived. In Dayak communities across Borneo, a wild boar fang worn as a necklace was exactly that kind of object. Not jewelry first. Protection first.

Why a boar's fang, specifically

A wild boar is not an easy animal to face. It is fast, strong, and surprisingly dangerous when cornered — which is part of why its fang was chosen to carry this meaning. Taking a fang from an animal that could have won was understood as a transfer: some of that animal's strength, its instinct to fight rather than flee, passed to whoever carried the fang afterward. Worn close to the chest on a cord, a boar fang necklace was a quiet, constant reminder to stay alert rather than a decoration meant to be noticed by others first.

What I look for before I set one

Every fang I choose for this necklace is different. Some curve more sharply, some carry a deeper tone, some show faint ridges along the surface where the animal used it for years before it ever reached me. I do not sand these differences away. A fang that has been reshaped to look uniform loses the one thing that made the original object meaningful: proof that it came from something real, not a mould.

Prepared, not disguised

Preparing a boar fang necklace is mostly restraint. The fang is cleaned, stabilized, and set onto a simple cord by hand, with as little alteration to its natural shape as the piece allows. No polish is applied heavy enough to erase its surface texture. No two fangs are quite the same length, curve, or shade, and the necklace is better for it — each one ends up being closer to a specific animal than to a general idea of what a boar fang should look like.

Wearing it today

Almost nobody who wears one of these fang necklaces now is walking into the forest the way a Dayak hunter once did. But the instinct behind it still makes sense: carrying something that reminds you to stay alert, to respect what you are walking into, and to trust your own nerve when it matters. That is still what a wild boar fang necklace offers, worn exactly as it was generations ago, just now as a conscious choice rather than a given.
